As the CompTIA SGA Teams gears up for a busy 2018, we have highlighted a number of the key policy issues they will be addressing in 2018.

CompTIA executive vice president of public advocacy wrote an op-ed for Morning Consult on June 19 and described how by 2024, there will be 1.8 million unfilled tech jobs, according to CompTIA. Given technology’s importance to the economy, ensuring that we can fill those jobs should be a national priority.

At the beginning of December, the CompTIA Policy Executive Board (PxB) met to review and finalize CompTIA’s 2017 policy priorities. This group is charged with ensuring all policy committees are aware of policy positions and initiatives, seek consensus for those positions, and provide guidance on the growth and direction of CompTIA advocacy activities.

During a Policy Executive Board (PxB) dinner in December, we were honored to have Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX), Ambassador Rufus Yerxa, President and CEO of the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), and Jeff Lambert from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) join us for a lively discussion on what the next several months may hold for tech policy and larger geopolitical considerations.

CompTIA partnered with nearly a dozen other technology organizations in hosting Innovation Nation events at the RNC Convention in Cleveland and the DNC Convention in Philadelphia. Innovation Nation brought public policy into focus at signature events, engaging congressional leaders, campaign officials, and industry leaders in conversations to explore how an innovation agenda might take shape in the next Congress under their party’s president.

Yesterday the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the Data Security and Breach Notification Act of 2015 by a vote of 29-20. We continue to support an effort to pass a federal preemption of state data breach laws to ensure that companies are subject to one notification requirement instead of a patchwork of laws – many of which are inconsistent with each other.
